EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping blends ancient wisdom from traditional Chinese medicine with modern psychological principles into a powerful mind-body healing technique.

The “tapping” aspect stems from the ancient practice of acupuncture in Chinese medicine. Instead of using needles, you stimulate specific energy meridian points on the body by tapping them with your fingertips. This is thought to help restore balance and remove blockages in your energy pathways.

These tapping points are located on major acupuncture meridians, mainly on the face, hands, and torso. During an EFT session, you’ll systematically tap through a sequence of these points while simultaneously using techniques adapted from modern psychotherapeutic methods.

While tapping on the meridian points provides the “energy” component from Chinese medicine, EFT incorporates psychological methods like cognitive restructuring, exposure therapy, and mindfulness. You focus intensely on the specific issue, thought pattern, emotion or sensation you want to shift.

As you tap through the points, you’ll also voice specific reminders and affirmations related to that issue. This helps cognitively reprogram your mind and nervous system’s reaction to that trigger, similar to methods used in psychology.

EFT tapping combines the mind component from psychology with the body/energy component from Chinese medicine in one integrated mind-body approach. This powerful combination seems to help “reprogram” your neurological pathways and energy flow to reduce stress, trauma, cravings, pain and more.

A Brief History of EFT

 

EFT has its roots in ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. It was developed in the 1990s by Stanford engineer Gary Craig, inspired by the work of psychologist Roger Callahan.

While still considered a relatively new technique in the West, tapping has ancient origins and is similar to practices used in traditional Chinese medicine for millennia. It’s rapidly gaining mainstream acceptance as a therapeutic, and a self-help method.
